When a tooth is decayed or damaged, the dentist performs, if necessary, local anesthesia before removing any carious or unhealthy substance from the tooth. Sometimes, the nerve located inside the tooth becomes contaminated and reacts to this contamination. The intense pain that this contamination can cause is called pulpitis. Then the pulp (nerve of the tooth) breaks down and becomes infected. This is called pulp necrosis and is what causes dental abscesses. In either case, if you want to keep the tooth, it will be necessary to carry out root canal treatment. The dentist then removes what remains of the pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals of each of the roots and closes these canals with gutta percha (a material that looks like rubber). Wisdom teeth or 3rd molars erupt between the ages of 16 and 25 but can appear much later, hence their name. It also sometimes happens that these teeth remain caught under the jaw bone or that they are simply missing.
