Generally, the first visit to the clinic takes place during a complete examination and dental cleaning. We take a summary of your overall health and dental history, take x-rays, and then proceed to scaling and polishing your teeth to remove stains. These steps are usually done by your dental hygienist.

The dentist will then carry out a complete dental examination with the help of the hygienist. In addition to noting all the restorations already present in the mouth, here are the points that the dentist checks during his visual and radiological examination:

  • Dental cavities
  • General condition of the gums, tongue and other mucous membranes
  • Wear, erosion, dental abfractions
  • Cracking, clicking, deviation of jaw opening
  • Palpation of the lymph nodes to detect masses
  • Tooth color
  • Assessment of the condition of the gums and bone support
  • Screening for oral cancer on the mucous membranes
  • Screening for cysts and lesions on panoramic radiography
  • Wisdom teeth assessment

Why x-rays?

Many significant diseases and lesions are not seen on visual dental examination and may be asymptomatic. Also, cavities between your teeth are also invisible without an x-ray. X-rays are therefore essential for a complete dental examination.

We recommend taking interproximal x-rays (between the teeth) once a year and a panoramic x-ray every 5 years. The latter helps dental health professionals detect different types of cysts, masses, tumors, lesions that may occur in the sinuses or the bone structure of the jaw. The dentist can also observe the positioning of wisdom teeth when they are present and impacted in the bone.

Concerning toddlers, the first visit to the dentist should be around 2 years old.

In this way, the child is introduced to the environment and can thus slowly get to grips with all the stages of a visit to the dentist. We follow the child’s pace when it comes to dental cleanings and never insist. The main thing is that he feels comfortable during his visit to the dental clinic.
